The HALE UAVs have very high flying altitude where the air is very thin and temperature is very low. DRDO has come up with its HALE UAV design to cover the full spectrum of ISTAR. The Aeronautical Design Establishment(ADE) of DRDO has jointly completed the feasibility studies with HAL in line with the armed forces. The HALE UAV will have maximum All UP Weight(AUP) of 42,00-52,00 kg and will be equipped with a 940 HP turboprop engine. It will have payload in excess of 2,000 kg and flight altitude in-excess of 35,000 ft. It will have speed of 350 kmph and endurance of more than 25 hours. It will features integrated net centric operations. As per report from the Financial Express, The DRDO's HALE UAV has completed 65 flights and demonstrated flight endurance of 10 hours. It has Automatic Take-off & Landing (ATOL), Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Store carrying capability. The development of HALE UAV will be take some time and India is in desperate need to these UAVs to not only monitor its border with China and Pakistan but also maintain surveillance over the IOR. Additional procurement of MQ-9 India and US have been negotiating for the deal for additional MQ-9B armed drones for almost six years. India is the only non-NATO country cleared for the acquisition of this platform. The recent reports reveals that Indian Armed forces have pruned the requirement of 30 MQ-9 RPAs to 18 with each services getting 6 RPAs. The deal to procure 18 MQ-9 RPAs is going to be $1.8 billion (approximately Rs 14,824 crore) as per News9 report which is going to be announced during PM Modi's upcoming US visit in June. A separate Rs 800 crore agreement to lease two MQ-9 Sea Guardian drones for the Indian Navy, will also be announced. The 18 MQ-9B also known as Predator is going to be armed version. Local assembly of MQ 9 India has negotiated for the local assembly of the MQ 9 Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA). Indian Navy chief has told that at least 60% of the quantity of the aircraft proposed for procurement in India will be manufactured in India. For local manufacturing, General Atomics has partnered Bharat Forge to produce main landing gear components, sub-assemblies and assemblies for RPA.
