| Video Discription | As Iraq's second largest city Mosul is overrun by insurgents we take a look at how a country which has faced over ten years of violence, finds itself yet again on the brink of civil war. The 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq sparked a fierce insurgency against the US "occupiers". Most were drawn from Iraq's Sunni Muslim community, which had enjoyed privileged status under President Saddam Hussein. As the insurgency grew in strength, Iraq's Sunni militants also allied with al-Qaeda, which preaches a Sunni extremist worldview. As well as fighting US troops, they also targeted the security forces and buildings of the new Iraqi government, now dominated by Iraq's Shia majority. The 2006 bombing of Iraq's Golden Shrine, a holy Shia site, led to a two-year Sunni-Shia civil war that claimed an estimated 30,000 lives. By 2008, the US troop "surge" had succeeded in turning Sunnis against their al-Qaeda allies and ending the civil war. But Sunnis still claimed they were discriminated against by the new Shia-dominated Iraqi government. Since the US troop pull-out at the end of 2011, al-Qaeda has revived its campaign against the Iraqi government, whose forces have struggled to contain it without US backing. In January 2014, al-Qaeda new's joint Syrian-Iraqi affiliate, al-Qaeda in Iraq and Al Shams (Syria), took over the Iraqi cities of Fallujah and Ramadi, west of Baghdad. The Iraqi government has failed to retake either Fallujah or Ramadi, and now have lost the northern city of Mosul too.
