Iwo Wesby’ego [The Iwo Wesby’s Orchestra] – La Cumparsita, Tango argentyńskie (Rodriguez) Syrena-Electro 1938 (Polish) NOTE: This famous Uruguayan tango performed by pre-war Polish artists has been presented a couple of times on this channel - by singer Janusz Popławski https://youtu.be/9xMGT32qdWA and by Orkiestra Braci Pindrass (The Pindrass Bros Orchestra) https://youtu.be/1ChC_2tIAA8 Now, it is sung by Stefan Witas – one of the most popular pre-war Polish crooners of the late 1930s. Orchestra is directed by Iwo Wesby, who previously led the band at theatre Qui pro Quo, to become the musical director at Syrena Records a few years before outbreak of the 2nd WW. As a Jew, he luckily survived the Holocaust being hidden in Warsaw in the apartment of the singer Mieczysław Fogg, with whom he had made many records before and who was his friend. As a sign of gratitude, Iwo Wesby gave Fogg a portable Telefunken recording device, which after the war in the ruined capital city allowed the singer to open his own record company Fogg-Records.
