| Video Discription | The Japanese Cocktail was created by legendary barman (and great-godfather of the cocktail renaissance) Jerry Thomas in the 1860's. It was first published in Thomas' Bon Vivant's Guide or How To Mix Drinks in 1862. We have no idea where this drink really came from but due to the brilliance of David Wondrich's research we have a good theory about it. According to Wondrich a member of the Japanese delegation to America ( a member of the first ever diplomatic mission to America) Tateishi Onojirou Noriyuki, or "Tommy" as he was known amongst the ladies of New York, frequented his bar on Broadway. The delegation lived close to Thomas' Saloon and drummed up the reputation for many nights out on the town. Shennanigans ensued, I'm sure. You'd have needed to distiguish yourself in some way if a bartender as famous as Thomas was would take notice of you and christen a cocktail in your name!
