Charles "Chase" Merritt was found guilty of first degree murder and on June 24, 2019, jurors recommended life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of his business partner, Joseph McStay, and three death penalties for the murders of Summer, Gianni, Joseph Jr. Following the penalty phase verdict, the temporary desert memorial site was dismantled June 30, 2019 by family members, jurors, and key personnel from San Bernardino County.
