| Video Discription | Joaquim Carvalho Cruz (born March 12, 1963 in Taguatinga) - Brazilian athlete, middle-distance runner, Olympic champion and runner-up. In 1981 he set a world record for juniors in the 800 m race with a score of 1.44.3 minutes. He then became a scholarship holder of the University of Oregon. After winning the US Academic Championship (NCAA) 800 m in 1983, he played at the first World Championships in Helsinki, where he won a bronze medal over this distance. He won 800m at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles ahead of Sebastian Coe in 1: 43.00, which was an Olympic record. Due to a cold, he did not appear in the semi-finals of the 1500 m race. A few weeks after the Olympics, Cruz set the Brazilian 800 m record by 1: 41.77, which so far gives him the fifth place on the lists of the fastest runners at this distance (after David Rudisha, Wilson Kipketer, Sebastian Coe and Nijel Amos). In 1984 he also set in Nice, the so far current South American record in the 1000 m race, with a score of 2: 14.09 minutes. In 1987 he won the 1,500m race at the Pan-American Games in Indianapolis.
