The epidural is deemed to be safe in labor and there is no evidence to suggest that the epidural may be linked to backache after labor and it helps labor progress smoothly and most of our obstetric success in the form of great number of normal vaginal delivery is due to the fact that our patients who have taken epidural have the patience to wait for as long as it takes for them to deliver normally. I don’t like the term “ painless delivery” because it implies that a lady might go into labor and deliver with no discomfort at all. That is not entirely true. We usually advice or ask for an epidural once active labor has set in. Before that happens in the course of induction there might be some discomfort when the lady is not still in active labor and after an epidural is instituted, 70 to 90% of the pain is taken away. In a small minority of people who take epidural, a patchy effect, that is some places wherever there is discomfort may continue and in some cases the epidural may need to be topped up in case she feels pain in the course of labor and that the anesthesiologists do.
