Reaffirming his commitment to champion the rights of Filipino workers in the Philippines and abroad, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. led the celebration of the 122nd Labor Day in Malacañan Palace on May 1, 2024.
“Exactly 50 years ago, on these very same grounds, my father, then President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., signed the Labor Code of the Philippines in the presence of representatives of various sectors. The Labor Code, borne out of the vision for development, employment and social justice, has been one of the most enduring pieces of social legislation in the country. In his own words, and I quote, I remember vividly: ‘Growth will always be tempered by justice, and development will always be weighted by the dignity of man,” the President said.
He cited some of the Administration’s programs, projects and achievements aimed to provide protection, growth and development for Filipino workers and their families such as the Labor and Employment Plan 2023-2028, Trabaho Para sa Bayan Act, skills training by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), technical and vocational training courses by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), ratification of the Violence and Harassment Convention No. 190 with the International Labor Organization (ILO), and Executive Order No. 23, series of 2023 on Reinforcing and Protecting the Freedom of Association and the Right to Organize of Workers.
He directed the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) to strengthen protection of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) by making sure that all forms of assistance will be provided to those requiring welfare, repatriation and reintegration services; strengthen Philippine efforts on labor diplomacy at the bilateral and multilateral levels; ensure safe and ethical recruitment processes and just and humane conditions for OFWs; and, empower OFWs as partners of government in nation-building.
“Para naman sa mga Contract of Service at Job Order personnel ng pamahalaan, marahil narinig na ninyo pero uulitin ko po: Tayo ay nagdesisyon na ipagpatuloy ang inyong serbisyo hanggang sa 2025. Pag-aaralan nating mabuti ang angkop na struktura sa pamahalaan,” President Marcos Jr. added.
The Chief Executive lauded the awardees in The Outstanding Workers of the Republic (TOWER) Awards for their exemplary contributions in their respective fields and mentioned the soon-to-be-built Workers Rehabilitation Center in Tanay, Rizal that will serve as a sanctuary and place of rehabilitation for workers who suffered work-related injuries.
He also unveiled and led the launching of the commemorative stamp signaling the 50th anniversary of the promulgation of Presidential Decree No. 442, known as the Labor Code of the Philippines, signed by his father, President Ferdinand E. Marcos on 1 May 1974.
“Sa lahat ng mga manggagawang Pilipino, muli akong nagpapasalamat sa inyo…Kayo ang mukha ng Bagong Pilipinas – magagaling, masisipag at punong-puno ng dedikasyon – kaya’t nararapat lamang na bigyan ng dangal, respeto at paghanga,” President Marcos Jr. ended in his keynote message.
