| Video Discription | The Lonar Lake formed by the impact of meteorites, is the only saltwater lake in the country and the third largest in the world. The lake is famous for its water properties and for its high alkaline water. The water in this lake always appears to be in different colors, sometimes green due to algae in the water and blue due to the blue color of the sky, the sun rays show different shades on this water throughout the day. Sometimes it even turns yellow in summer. However, on June 10, 2020, the green and blue waters of the world-famous Lonar Lake suddenly turned pink, and locals flocked to Lonar to see the lake. Although the corona lockdown has stopped the influx of tourists, the news reached the world through social media within a day. Some people superstitiously predicted that it could be a sign of deadly contamination, or even unknown environmental problem. According to information available on the Internet, some people urged that the colour of the water was caused by certain type of Bacteria and Algae. There are some lakes and seas that turn pink all over the world, including Maharlu Lake in Iran, Hillier Lake in Australia, and Lake Retba Dead Sea in South Africa. Scientists have speculated that the evaporation of the water made the water more alkaline, and that the halobacteria and single-celled plant called Dunaliya salina secreted pigment called carotenoid, turned the water pink. The water at Lonar is also very salty and the same halobacteria and Dunaliya salina would have switched its colour to Pink. Not often but sometimes patches of pink colour are visible over the surface of the Lonar lake. However, this is the first time in recent period that the entire water has turned pink. The Forest Department has sent samples of the water from the lake to Niri and Agharkar Institutes for further scientific analysis. Scientist from NIRI institute had also visited this lake to have a survey. They also collected water samples. After the arrival of reports from these institutes, we will have an exact reason behind the pink colour phenomenon.
