| Video Discription | For the first time in over 20 years, 2 Westland Lysanders fly together in UK skies during the Shuttleworth May Evening Airshow 2019. Piloted by Lee Proudfoot, the Aircraft Restoration Company's recently restored Lysander IIIA, Y1363, G-CCOM, wears the markings of V9312 and is coded LX-E. On her public air display debut she flies here with the Shuttleworth Collection's 'Special Duties' Lysander IIIA, V9312, G-AZWT, which is being flown by Rob Millinchip. Lysander V9312 (G-CCOM) has been owned by the Aircraft Restoration Company since 2003 and was restored to flying condition by a team of full time and volunteer engineers. It was built by Westlands during 1940 and is believed to be the only solely Westland built Lysander to be restored to airworthy condition in the UK, the others having incorporated Canadian built components. The aircraft was taken on charge by the RAF at 33 M.U. at Lynham on 4th January 1941 and subsequently served with 613, 225 and 4 Squadrons. On 26th April 1942, whilst serving with 4 Squadron, V9312 suffered Category B accident damage to a wing. This was repaired at Fairfield, Watford and whilst there it was converted to target tug status. The aircraft was then sent to Liverpool, from where it sailed to Canada arriving on 18th October 1942. Whilst in Canada V9312 served with the Commonwealth Air Training Plan at Mossbank, Saskatchewan, where it last flew on 30th October 1944. V9312 was struck off charge in October in 1946 and later came into the possession of Harry Wherreat at Assiniboa, Saskatchewan along with several other aircraft. The Lysander was then sold to Kermit Weeks at Polk City, Florida who planned to restore the aircraft but no work was done. It was acquired by ARCo in unrestored condition and arrived at Duxford on 4th June 2003. After 15 years of restoration, on 8th August 2018, the ‘Lizzie’s’ nine cylinder Bristol Mercury Engine burst into life for the first time since 30th December 1944. Once the engine setup had been completed, and a few personal touches in the form of a roundel red spinner and wheel covers had been added, the Lysander took to the skies on 28th August 2018 wearing her 225 Squadron Livery. The Shuttleworth Collection's Lysander leading the formation, was built originally for the RAF as V9552 and went to Canada in 1942 as a target tug for the RCAF. Post WWII it was sold to a Canadian collector and then, in 1971, went to the Strathallan Collection in Scotland where it was restored to flying condition by late 1979. Grounded in 1986 it was stored, then went to Duxford in 1997 for restoration. Purchased by the Shuttleworth Veteran Aviation Society it joined the Collection in 1998. It arrived painted in standard RAF camouflage with additional markings to represent No. 309 (Polish) Squadron while operating from bases in Scotland between 1940 and 1942. In the autumn of 1999, with the aid of a donation from the family of Peter Vaughan Fowler who had flown with 161 Squadron on Lysander operations during World War II, it was repainted in black overall with the markings of his aircraft, bearing the serial V9367. A fixed ladder was installed to allow rapid access to the rear cockpit – as fitted to facilitate picking up agents; a dummy 150 gallon long range fuel tank was attached below the fuselage. In this configuration the Lysander III S.D. (Special Duties) was employed by No. 161 RAF Squadron on clandestine night flying operations from RAF Tempsford and Tangmere between 1942 and 1945. After undercarriage repairs during 2015 the Lysander returned to airworthiness in April 2016.
