This is how to become smarter, more creative, and to improve and grow your brain by simply using your other, non-dominant hand. This is how it works:
The brain is divided into two parts, the left and right brain. The left-brain is said to be in control of order and logic reasoning, while the right brain is said to be in control of imagination and creativity.
However, it is the left side of your brain that controls your right side movements of your body. So if you’re right handed you’re mostly stimulating your left-brain, the logical and reasoning part. And the same goes for the other side. It is your right side of your brain that controls your left side movements of your body. And therefore, writing with your left hand, will stimulate more of the right hemisphere of your brain, the one in control of creativity and imagination.
And since each of our hands is connected to each side of our brain, we can stimulate our brains by stimulating our hands. This process will make use of brain plasticity, which is our brain’s capability to constantly change, adapt, grow and re-wire itself by growing new neurons, at any age, for better or worse. Therefore, by using your opposite hand, your brain will strengthen neural connections and even grow new ones. There are also studies that indicate that when using your dominant hand, only one hemisphere of your brain is active. While as if you use your non-dominant hand, both your brains hemispheres are activated, which might result in different thinking and more creativity.
So now, by knowing all the benefits of entering your brains less stimulated hemisphere, why not try it out?! Here is what you can start to do to incorporate it into your daily life:
In whatever you do daily, try to become more aware of what you mainly use your dominant hand for, and try to make small steps in switching it up every now and then in able to train and utilize more of your brains potential. Try writing with your other hand, brushing your teeth, showering, going to the toilet, opening doors and other daily activities. In the long run, you might unleash some hidden creativity by using more of your left hand, or become more logical and analytical by using your right hand.
It will definitely feel weird in the beginning and most likely remind you of how you learned things for the first time as a kid. But that might very much be of a good thing, seeing as our brain is most elastic and adaptable as a child. And just like a child, it will also make you focus more on the task at hand, making your daily tasks less automated or robotic by making you more aware of the present moment you live in.
