Here are some of the most common, specific causes of abdominal distress. * Bladder infections/stones Infections occur when bacteria enters and grows in the urinary system, causing pain or stinging during urination. Bladder stones may cause lower abdomen pain by irritating the bladder wall or blocking the flow of urine. * Kidney stones/kidney infections Stones form in the kidneys and then move into the ureters, blocking urine flow. This causes extremely painful swelling and inflammation in the abdomen and back. A kidney infection grows when bacteria migrate upward from the bladder and grow in the kidneys. An acute kidney infection can be a life threatening medical emergency.. * Gallbladder/pancreas issues Pain caused by problems with the gallbladder (gallstones, gallbladder attacks) and pancreas (pancreatitis) usually occurs in the upper abdomen. But the distress may radiate down to the lower abdomen too.
