2. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Luisa Gonzalez, Presidential Candidate for the Citizen Revolution Movement:
"The day I found out about the murder of Fernando Villavicencio, I was in a public event campaigning. I suspended the campaign because we did not think it was right to continue in a celebration when they had murdered a companion. When I say that I mean that he was a fellow candidate. That's beyond political positions. I clearly said that when someone is attacked, we're all under attack; when someone is touched, we are all touched. When any human being is killed in the country, we are all at risk."

4. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Luisa Gonzalez, Presidential Candidate for the Citizen Revolution Movement:
"Well, I have been asked to use bulletproof vest several times, I have never used it, as you can notice in the photographs. The vest is something that is noticeable, no, I have never used it and I will not use it either, they have not managed to convince me of it. I believe that our days are in the hands of God not of a criminal. This is my faith. This is a personal issue, beyond that if the security has been reinforced a little more, but as I am telling you, the risk is for all citizens."

6. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Luisa Gonzalez, Presidential Candidate for the Citizen Revolution Movement:
"In a year and a half what we can do is to reduce violence and crime, I cannot say that we will again be the second safest country in Latin America, as it was during the Citizen Revolution. What we can do in a year a half is to regain control of the country, because we will invest in the public force, 500 million dollars to re-equip the National Police."

8. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Luisa Gonzalez, Presidential Candidate for the Citizen Revolution Movement:
"Because Ecuador needs unity, a minimum agreement with all sectors, an agreement to take the country to development. Insecurity, hunger, unemployment, health, education, the need of the people, that does not recognize the political flag. People don't know if we are from left or right. They don't recognize and neither do they care. What is important here is that your right to life is guaranteed, that your right to health is guaranteed, that your right to education is guaranteed and that is what has to prevail in the government."

STORYLINE:
The frontrunner in the Ecuadorian presidential elections, Luisa Gonzalez, said she will continue her campaign with increased security, as a third politician was confirmed killed during the presidential race.
The fatal shooting of Pedro Briones, a local leader of Citizen Revolution, the party of former President Rafael Correa, was confirmed by González.
The shooting happened in the northern province of Esmeraldas.
It follows the assassination of Fernando Villavicencio, who had a famously tough stance on organized crime and corruption.
Villavicencio was killed at the end of a political rally in Quito, the capital, despite having a security detail that included police and bodyguards.
Their slayings followed the July 26 shooting that killed the mayor of Manta, Ecuador’s third largest city. Agustín Intriago, 38, had recently been re-elected to a term that began in May.
