| Video Discription | Making use of a length of rebar, a blast furnace, a knifemaker´s forge and a borrowed anvil to make a sword. The pommel´s from rebar and the crossguard from 14mm square mild steel bar. The production of rebar requires no tight control over carbon content, so this varies. It´s typically around 0.2% - to make a good blade, 0.4% is really the minimum needed, so rebar´s not a great material to use. Neither is a combination of a knifemaker´s forge (not enough heat) and a blast furnace (too much heat) a substitute for an appropriate forge for this job, any more than a sanding machine cable-tied to a garden bench is equivalent to a belt sander. Taking all this into account, I think this has been a worthwhile project as it gave me something of an insight into the labour-intensiveness of the manufacture of metal objects before the industrial revolution. Though I doubt the sword itself would be a very effective weapon, I´m very glad that I made it and grateful to my friends Adam for the loan of his forge, and Edward for the loan of the anvil.
