In this video Peter Brown, the First Year Director of Mathematics in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, UNSW, explains the differences between the courses MATH1011, MATH1131 and MATH1141. Which you course you take should depend on your background, and choosing the right course will smooth your way to a successful first year mathematics experience at UNSW. In particular, many students make the mistake of underestimating the difficulty and increased expectations involved with our Higher course MATH1141, and find that dropping down later in the term to MATH1131 complicates their experience. You should only be in the higher course if you have done Extension 2 or very well in Extension 1, and have a strong interest in mathematics.
