When it comes to portion sizes, Dr. Craft says, “Everything that you eat should be in one handful. This should be your meat, your protein. This should be your carb. This should be your fat. Well, you know, you ate four dinner rolls the size of your hand. You ate a salad the size of your hand. You ate a steak the size of your hand. A, a potato the size of your hand. And then, you had a molten lava cake the size of your hand. Plus four nice fizzy Coke drinks that were the size of your hand. You just ate a week's worth of calories in one sitting.” According to the National Institutes of Health, portion size and serving size are not the same things. Here is how the NIH defines them both: Portion Size- is how much food you choose to eat at one time, whether in a restaurant, from a package, or in your own kitchen. A portion is 100 percent under our control. Many foods that come as a single portion actually contain multiple servings. Serving Size- is the amount of food listed on a product’s Nutrition Facts label. So all of the nutritional values you see on the label are for the serving size the manufacturer suggests on the package. A portion size may also be bigger than a serving size. For example, the serving size on the Nutrition Facts label for your favorite cereal may be 1 cup, but you may pour yourself 1½ cups in a bowl.
