Hey there, Beautiful People! I go over some common scams and red flags you need to be on the lookout for in this video when shopping on Mercari. This is an educational video and my hope is that by spotting these red flags, you can avoid being scammed.
Red flag 1: The price is too good to be true. Here's my guideline for this - if something is selling for less than 70% of the item's normal retail price, then it might be a scam.
Red flag 2: The profile is new. If the seller has no reviews, no sales, and only 1 or 2 items listed, then it might be a scam. Further, if the seller didn't bother putting up a profile pic, even a fake one, then this should give you more concern.
Red flag 3: The comment section. If many comments are under review, removed, or left unanswered, or if there are people saying it's a scam, then it's a scam.
Red flag 4: If the item you're looking at it in some carts, despite there being red flags 1 and 2, then this may be a false sense of urgency. We don't know who those buyers are; they may in fact be related in someway to the seller and are placing that item in their cart in an attempt to get you to buy the item before they do. Don't take the bait!
Red flag 5: Price cuts. If the item has seen many price cuts, then something's up. Especially if there's other red flags, this one is designed to make you act hastily.
Red flag 6: Past sales. This one is a bit trickier, but if the seller has sold some items in the past, and has a 5 star rating on their profile, take a look at what they sold. If the items they sold are cheap, and they happen to be selling a very expensive item, this is a red flag.
Red flag 7: Purchases. I didn't mention this one in the video, but it did just come to me. If the seller has bought some items, it may give them more positive ratings. This is tricky too because if they bought cheap items, and sold cheap items, while they have 1 very expensive item for sale, then it may be a scam.
Red flag 8: The item description. This one has more weight if red flags 1 and 2 are there. Basically, the seller is trying to speak your language. So, they make the item they're trying to sell sound more legitimate.
Red flag 9: Authentication. This one depends on the item. I don't trust it at all, since I bought an authenticated item that still turned out to be a rep / clone. We have no idea who the third party authenticators are, or how they're authenticating stuff, but the fact that items are authenticated when they are, in fact, bogus, shows you that this feature shouldn't be trusted. Be wary, if you see this on an item you're after.
The above are all signs you may be looking at a scam. If all these red flags are there, then ignore the listing. If some of these red flags are there, then act with caution. And, at the end of the day, use your gut and trust your instinct. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. So, it's best to play it safe!
If you have any questions or concerns about a product you're looking at (cameras or camera gear), let me know in the comment section and I'll let you know what my thoughts are. I know the other Beautiful People will chip in too. Play it safe!
