The San Antonio-class typically transport multiple MV-22 Osprey Tilt-Rotor Aircraft, Landing Craft Air Cushions (LCAC) (hovercrafts) or Landing Craft Utility (LCU) vessels that can transport automobiles, such as Armoured Fighting Vehicles. A group of Amphibious Assault Vehicles are also transported on board, capable of deploying into the water to reach land. These boats and amphibious vehicles can be used by Marines to land on shore in order to advance an expeditionary force, for example. The USS Mesa Verde (LPD-19) deployed from North Carolina on July 10th, 2023, with the USS Bataan (LHD-5) and USS Carter Hall (LSD-50) as part of the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group/26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable). The group consists of nearly 4,000 Sailors and Marines from the US Navy and US Marine Corps.
