The secret cult of Mithras and the mysteries surrounding it have been incredibly interesting to historians, archeologists, and theologists the world over. While I may not be in the same league as real professionals in the field, I aim to take a crack at explaining the unexplainable. Ancient religions have always interested me, along with deepening our understanding of contemporary religions, it can also help us understand more of the culture surrounding those who came before us. With the Roman Empire, there is a ton of religious and cultural change from the beginning to the unfortunate end. You would be forgiven for thinking that shortly after Christianity was introduced to the main stream, that was it for any of the other beliefs, but there is a lot more to it than that. There were a great many religions that existed at one point in time. Countless gods and deities, from basic animism and druidry, to more advanced polytheistic practices like the Greek gods. There are only a few worshiped in the modern time however, with the biggest of them being the Abrahamic beliefs of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. What if I told you that if things had gone just a little differently, there would be another big player in the game of world religion? In the early Roman empire there existed a belief system so mysterious there is almost no recorded history throughout the entire world. With practices so hidden that many believe the cult to have influenced the flow of religious practice for the rest of human history. Well that religion would be Mithraism. With influences that can be seen all across the world, this ancient religion may be more familiar than you might first think. So let’s dive into this ancient cult and learn what we can about Mithras.
