The name passed also to the northern coast of the Kola peninsula. During World War I, the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea were blocked for Russia. The country needed a non-freezing port on the Arctic Ocean. They found a place for it in the Gulf of Kola. The port is kept from freezing by the warm North Atlantic current. During World War II, the hero city of Murmansk received military assistance from allied countries. The Nazis dropped 185,000 bombs on the city. Murmansk was second only to Stalingrad in bombing density. Murmansk is the base of the Northern Fleet, the largest city in the world behind the Arctic Circle, and the home port of all Russian nuclear icebreakers. The monument to the development of the Arctic – the first atomic icebreaker "Lenin" – became a floating museum.
