💥 MAYAN CIVILIZATION:
- Let's go back in time to prehistory, specifically to the Upper Paleolithic, around 20,000 BC. Homo sapiens is then the only species representing the human race. During this ice age, the Bering Strait was nothing more than a huge ice sheet that formed a gigantic bridge between Asia and North America, also known as Beringia. For thousands of years, this route was used by waves of migrants from Asia in search of new hunting grounds. Thus, the entire American continent was populated over the centuries, subsisting on hunting, fishing and gathering wild plants and fruits.
Around the VIIIᵉ millennium BC, global warming melted the ice, interrupting the migratory course active during this Mesolithic epoch. Thereafter, the American continent was separated from the rest of the world and witnessed the development of the first pre-Columbian civilizations in North and South America, as well as in Central America, called Mesoamerica. This titanic Mesoamerican territory consists of central Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and the Pacific coast of Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
Then, these tribal agricultural settlements located in the Basin of Mexico, the region of La Venta and along the Pacific coast, made a tremendous cultural leap from 2500 BC. A sizable civilization, bearing the name Olmec, emerged and prosperous
and thriving village communities were established everywhere.
In 1000 B.C., a small village was established in Cuello, Belize, with community buildings that grew in importance. The inhabitants began to practice burial customs and the growth of Cuello continued with the establishment of small villages on the Yucatan and Guatemalan peninsulas.
From 1000 to 300 B.C., the Maya country grew rapidly, dividing into two main geographic areas: the Highlands and the Lowlands, covering approximately 400,000 km².
The Preclassic period is divided into three parts: the Early Preclassic, from 2500 to 1200 BC, the Middle Preclassic, from 1200 to 400 BC, for which archaeological evidence shows the beginning of Maya civilization around 1000 BC, and the Late Preclassic, from 400 to 250 BC.
As construction expanded on a large scale, a predetermined axis was established according to the cardinal points. The Maya based their architecture on astrology. Governmental and religious buildings, such as the royal acropolis, pyramidal temples and sometimes ball courts, are aligned with certain constellations, according to the Maya interpretation of the orbits and stars. Outside the ritual center, the dwellings of minor nobles, small temples and individual sanctuaries spread out. Then, the modest huts of the people are grouped outside the urban center.
The science of the Maya was not limited to mathematics. They were also learned astronomers and this discipline was the responsibility of the priests. The mystery of the cosmos, the cyclical rhythm of the seasons and their influence on the cultivation of corn, and even the cycle of life and death, of day and night, fascinated this civilization.
