The Japan round of the Volleyball Nations League, the Kaitori Daikichi Volleyball Nations League 2024 Fukuoka Tournament, began on Tuesday, June 4th at the West Japan General Exhibition Center (Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture). This tournament is the only home game of the season for the Japanese men's and women's volleyball national teams, with the men's tournament running until Sunday, the 9th, and the women's tournament running from Tuesday, the 11th to Sunday, the 16th. The Japanese men's national team, ranked 4th in the FIVB world rankings (before the start of the match), faced Iran, ranked 16th, and won in straight sets 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-17), bringing their overall record in the tournament to 4 wins and 1 loss. This was the first match since captain Yuki Ishikawa and Ai Takahashi joined the team. As Ishikawa said after the match, "I think there are still some areas where we are not yet in sync," there were some concerns about their teamwork, but they played a stable match without any mistakes from the beginning. Towards the end, they allowed Iran consecutive breaks and were within one point, but Ai Takahashi's spike made it 25-23, and they took the lead in the first set. In the second set, spikes were blocked more often than in the previous set, and they were unable to take the lead, but towards the end, Ishikawa got a break point on serve, and took a four-point lead from 19-18 to 22-18, and went on to win the set 25-22. In the third set, Japan made few mistakes and served effectively, putting pressure on Iran. They hit a spike success rate of 74 percent, higher than in the previous two sets, and took a four-point lead in the middle of the match, eventually leading by eight points at 25-17. Japan was able to create a game that thwarted Iran's intentions, and finished the first match in straight sets. In this match, Iran's serves were targeted at Takahashi Ai, but Takahashi showed a stable return rate of over 60% with A and B passes, contributing to Japan's side-out rate. In addition, there was only one spike error throughout the match, and although Japan was often shut out by blocks in the Brazil tournament, being able to improve on that was also a factor in the victory.
