October 25, 1955 in Haifa, Israel): Songs from the Pomegranate Garden (2010; A Judeo-Spanish Song Cycle) We are fortunate in the Springs to have an esteemed composer among us. Born in Haifa, Israel, Ofer Ben-Amots currently serves as the Chair of the Music Department at Colorado College. His compositions often embrace the rhythmic and melodic complexities inherent in Eastern European folk music. This song cycle Kantes del verdgel de granadas (Songs from the Pomegranate Garden) - presented in Judeo-Spanish (Ladino), which is the Romance language of the Sephardic Jews - is no exception. Together, the five pieces offer an opportunity to experience the poetry, not just through the words, but through the relationship between the voice and the orchestra. Ben-Amots offers the following regarding his composition: The lyrics of these songs are based on folk-poetry from various centuries. They are magical, passionate, and encompass a wide range of human emotions and experiences, from love and longing to sorrow and death, and from lightheartedness and folly to joy and happiness. The music is partially based on original Ladino tunes and partially original. However, phrases based on ancient Ladino melodies are starkly modified and composed in such a way to completely evoke personal imagery and interpretation. The vocal part portrays different characters in each of the five songs and ranges in expression from parlando secco to lirico espressivo. The role of the orchestra in this cycle is more than just an accompaniment; it converses with the voice, adds colors and character, and serves as a “commentary” on the sung text. Thus, the orchestral part is equal to, or at times even more predominant than the voice itself.
