| Video Discription | (23 Jun 2017) OLIVIA WILDE MAKES BROADWAY DEBUT IN '1984' As an actress, Olivia Wilde has many reasons why making her Broadway debut in George Orwell's dystopian thriller "1984" was special. As a mother she has just two: her young children. At the after party for the play's opening night Thursday (22 JUNE 2017), Wilde walked the red carpet with her co-stars Tom Sturridge and Reed Birney, along with Orwell's son, Richard Blair. Before going into the party, Wilde shared her thoughts on the importance of art in difficult times, the bumps and bruises she's endured since rehearsals began, and her maternal reasoning for taking on the role of Julia. "Well certainly becoming a mother made me understand that you have to really focus on the future and what we're doing now and how it's going to affect our children's future. And I don't want my kids - although, unfortunately my kids early childhood will be spent during the Trump administration – I don't want them to associate politics with lies. I don't want them to assume that every president is someone who is openly lying to them and not caring about it," Wilde said. Wilde feels artists have a great responsibility in difficult times especially when it comes to seeking out truth, and that carries on to the lessons she wants to teach her children. "I want them to think that their representatives are there to serve them, and there to listen to them, and there aren't people, for instance, voting for insane health care bills that will detrimental to the larger public's health because they're just rooting for their own team... And I think what we're trying to say with this play is there's a way for man's association with each other to be something that has more integrity. I don't know - I'm optimistic about it. The message of the play is that we should love one another, and I hope my kids somehow glean that from this experience." The play's brutality onstage has disturbed some audience members, who have reportedly gotten "sick" from certain scenes. It's prompted producers to forbid anyone under 13 years-old from seeing the production. But the brutality was not limited to what the audience saw but also the actors during previews. Wilde broke her tailbone early in previews, and then split open her lip in a later show. She had no idea she would get knocked around so much in a play. "No, I didn't expect that. I didn't know it would so physically trying, but I'm really happy because it means, you know, we're just doing everything it takes to tell the story in the right way. It's an intense story and it involves a lot of intense participation," Wilde said. Regardless, Wilde felt that taking her lumps was well worth it. "Yeah, absolutely. Worth it 100 percent." But what about the pain? "It is totally exhilarating to perform on these scenes with Tom and with the rest of the cast. Sometimes, it's been physically intense, but great. I don't feel the pain until we're offstage, anyway," Wilde said. Wilde sees the physically and emotionally-draining dystopian tale as the perfect entry to the Great White Way. "Well, I wouldn't want it any other way. I'm excited that this is my Broadway debut because I feel like I'm a part of something that is really meaningful. We're up there on stage every night, eight times a week saying something that needs to be said," she said. That same dedication extends to Sturridge, who takes on the role Winston, the story's doomed protagonist. Part of what he endures on stage is what has upset audiences, and the actor admits it's not easy putting it behind him each night. "1984" is currently on Broadway at the Hudson Theatre.
