| Video Discription | www.cincinnatichildrens.org The PICU Up!™ Program at Cincinnati Children’s, developed at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, is used to help critically ill patients get up and move, when they otherwise would be confined to a bed. The challenge of moving patients like 5-year-old Nolan is everything attached to his body. Nurses have to be extremely careful to move him just right so that nothing happens to his breathing tube and other critical devices. Research in adults shows early mobility for these critically ill patients decreases their length of stay in the ICU. For Nolan’s mom Diane, PICU Up!™ meant she got the chance to hold her son for the first time in a month. Sitting in a chair helps Nolan take deep breaths and move secretions that may be in his lungs. It’s also good for him to be awake so he can interact with his environment. Most importantly, the ability to be held by his mom promotes bonding during what is an extremely stressful time for his family. After 129 days as an inpatient at Cincinnati Children’s Nolan is now home with his family! |
