| Video Discription | This panel will focus on the tools at your disposal to overturn convictions, modify sentences, and obtain early release for your client. These career defense attorneys with decades of experience on the front lines with the Federal Defender Program and Georgia Innocence Project will dive into considerations and best practices regarding when and how to develop and pursue direct appeals, Rule 35 motions to correct or reduce sentences, § 2255 habeas corpus motions, Rule 33 motions for a new trial, compassionate release motions (before and after Bryant), motions to terminate supervised release, and requests for pardon/clemency. Panelists will share their experience fighting for (and frequently winning) post-conviction relief in recent cases for their clients including Joe Maldonado Passage (aka “Joe Exotic”) (second appeal and motion for new trial now pending), Devonia Inman (exonerated after 23 years of wrongful imprisonment and conviction for murder), and others whose convictions have been overturned and/or sentences shortened due to effective advocacy after a guilty verdict or plea. Panel members will also discuss the possibility of filing certain motions in direct contravention of Circuit precedent.
