But what about before that? How many Presidents have run for a third term? Well, technically four. 80 years after George Washington first set the two-term precedent, Ulysses Grant was the first to BREAK that tradition…first by considering running for a third term in the election of 1876 and then later ACTUALLY running for a third term in the election of 1880. He didn’t even get nominated, however. Next up was Theodore Roosevelt, who ran for a third term in the crazy election of 1912. He lost. Next was Woodrow Wilson, who wanted a third term but his own political party wouldn’t let him run. And Harry Truman, the last President eligible to run for a third term, was highly unpopular at the time and dropped out of the race early.
