I genuinely believe that mockery, sarcasm, and caricaturizing can hinder clear thinking. It's not that all mockery is wrong. It's not that all sarcasm is wrong. But, they can easily become a way of expressing confirmation bias. In the case of Ricky Gervais, Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and a number of other influential atheists, it certainly is. I rarely recognize the version of Christianity that these guys argue against. Yet, these guys have come to formulate or otherwise represent the thinking of countless atheists and agnostics in the current generation, even if those people don't realize their criticisms trace back to that sort of thinking.
