Video Discription |
Just so we're clear about the 'racist comment' tag, the NCCRI and Pavee Point [a partnership of Irish Travellers and settled people working to improve the treatment of Irish Travellers] consider prejudice against travellers to be racism.
In relation to the comment above,
I would like to ask:
Is it racist?
and why would you consider this particular example acceptable.
---
Opinion:
Judging solely from the comment section, some Irish people are incredibly racist when it comes to this subject.
2nd opinion (The long winded one that I made myself write because of all the comments) :
The maker of this video does not condone any censoring of Tommy Tiernans comedic material. While the regulation of speech is inevitable for a society to exist, if a democracy is to function one must be incredibly wary of censorship. Freedom of speech (including Mr. Tiernans) must be ensured, because of the obvious importance in expressing your views freely.
With this in mind, one must also be aware that some expression can be costly. e.g. speech which directly or indirectly causes harm to another party (such as contributing towards racial hatred). So a bit of discernment/criticism is required obviously. Given the situation, there may be a need to evaluate whether certain speech comes at too much of a cost, or whether the importance of saying such speech outweighs the vulnerability of the subject matter being discussed.
In this case, It is not a matter of offence/taste, or if I find the joke funny or not funny; by using the image of a filthy, fly infested traveller as the punchline of a joke (without any sense of irony), the comment above clearly reinforces prejudicial stereotypes of travellers.
I don't know about you, but In my book the cost of such reinforcement far outweighs the benifits of amusing the suspect prejudice of a crowd with a throwaway knob gag.
With this particular joke Mr. Tiernan should cop on a bit. The comment is clearly discriminatory against a shunned minority, and no amount of 'sure its only a bit of craic' will alter that reality, especially in a country where anti-traveller sentiment is rife.
I am NOT saying that the Travelling community should be left out of a comedians material/commentary/ridicule - but there is a BIG difference between making relevant commentary on a particular group of peoples (Doug Stanhope anyone?) and labelling them as dirty and fly infested without any sense of irony.
There is a big cultural clash between settled and travelling communities in Ireland*, which should of course be addressed. But not like this, this is just the wrong mindframe to encourage.
Personally I would love if Tommy would speak out about 'the clash' mentioned above from his own perspective, and do so with the intelligence, frankness and humour he has brought to other subjects in the past, instead of simply ignoring the elephant in the room and (what seems to me with the comment above) pander to settled people's prejudices.
I mean really, if you swapped the 'itinerant' of the punchline with 'a black woman', the joke would clearly be prime standup material for a KKK comedy night in 1950s Alabama. Am I wrong?
So, why is it alright to say it the way it is do YOU think? Whats the difference? (that is a sincere question, this is an anonymous website, so why not throw in your 2 cents. It won't be censored. Unless it threatens someones life or something like that.)
It should also be noted that the crowd don't seem to mind the traveller comment at the gig. Some did manage, however, to get mortally offended when Mr. Tiernan mentions the death of Heath Ledger near one of his punch lines. Is it just me, or does such priorities of the crowd, make you think these people are moronic, vapid, and yunno, kinda racist.

what do you think?

Ammendment:
There is a noticable amount of anti-traveller sentiment posted on this page. I apologise to any members of the travelling community if these comments have caused you distress. I also apologise if I have given too much credence to the racists, either in the comment section or this video descriptor. If you wish to give feedback or criticism of this video, feel free to comment or send me a message.

While it is to be expected that people will say what they like here, sentences with some rationale and without derogatory remarks would be appreciated, if possible. [j7NB9TsYkQE] |
