Kids always love dinosaurs and love knowing more information about them - even though they are extinct creatures which are not there anymore - and boys always have those small toys of dinosaurs which they keep playing with. But the question is what are dinosaurs and what were the most extraordinary features they had? What are dinosaurs? Dinosaurs were reptiles that walked the earth for 165 million years in an era called "Mesozoic". Dinosaurs actually died long time before the first human beings appeared, about 63 million years. For kids to understand the whole thing about dinosaurs, they should also know what a fossil is. Fossils are actually the remains of dead animals or plants, and these fossils actually showed us what dinosaurs looked like and how they actually may have lived and what the earth was like when they were alive. When a dinosaur died, the hard parts of its body, like the teeth and the bones, were often buried in the mud. What was the biggest dinosaur? The biggest dinosaur that was ever found out there was called the Amphicoelias, which was about 50 metres and this was almost 100 tons, the same as 12 elephants. This dinosaur is actually big enough for any kid to even think about! In addition to knowing more about the biggest dinosaur there is, knowing about the one with the longest tail is also a must. The dinosaur with the longest neck was known as Mamenchisaurus which has a neck 13 metres long with 19 neck bones! This long neck actually could have helped this dinosaur to reach a four storey- building. So we now know that Amphicoelias was the biggest dinosaur and thus we should also know what was the smallest dinosaur. The smallest dinosaur was called Anchiornis which was between 35 and 40 centimetres long only, and this is smaller than a chicken. In addition to the biggest and the smallest dinosaurs out there, kids could also get introduced to the fastest dinosaur that used to live back then. The fastest dinosaur was called Gallimimus and there was also Ornithomimus, these two dinosaurs could run on 69 kilometers per hour, and this is as fast as an ostrich. Which dinosaur was considered the best hunter? The dinosaur that was considered the best hunter back at the time was named Tyrannosaurus Rex. Tyrannosaurus Rex had the most powerful bite , its jaws could be up to 1.2 meters long, which could tell much about how good a hunter it might have been. What was the biggest meat-eater dinosaur? There was a dinosaur called the Spinosaurus that could be up to 18 meters long and weigh as much as 20 tons! The Spinosaurus shape was like a modern crocodile and it used to live in water. Which dinosaur had the biggest head? There are actually lots of things and information to be known about dinosaurs and one of them is getting introduced to the one with the biggest head. The dinosaur with the largest head was called Pentaceratops, its skull was up to three meters long but it actually had a very small brain. What is a carnivore? A carnivore was a meat-eater dinosaur like the Tyrannosaurus Rex. Carnivores had strong sharp teeth and legs, good eye sight and a powerful sense of smell that helped them to hunt. What is a herbivore? Most dinosaurs were plant eaters called herbivores. Some of these dinosaurs actually had strong teeth for stripping leaves and twigs from trees which they often swallowed whole. Herbivores had very big tummies and they walked on all fours because they needed this support. Some of the plants that the dinosaurs used to eat are still found today. What is a pterosaur? A pterosaur was a flying animal like a dinosaur. A pterosaur had furry bodies and long, pointed jaws for catching their preys, they may have eaten insects, fish and they even ate small dinosaurs. The interesting thing about pterosaurs is that they had wings and could fly but when they land they walk on all their fours, using the fingers at the end of their wings to hit the ground. Dinosaurs used to lay eggs just like reptiles and birds do today, but instead of staying beside these eggs and take care of their babies, they actually used to leave their eggs behind. There were different shapes and sizes for these eggs, such as the sauropod egg which was round as a football and there was the oviraptor egg which was shaped like a potato.
