| Video Discription | Bonus Shui-Chen and Feng-Wu Fight | It was to be one of the best sword fighting scenes ever in animation history. First off, the animation is incredibly smooth. But one thing I love about the fight, is how both realistic and detailed it is. Yes, there are some feats in the fight that one would label ‘superhuman’, but it isn’t overdone and ridiculous like in some anime. The characters trip and slip in the snowy landscape. And when they do recover/counter, it makes sense. Their fighting styles are visibly distinct, but both still have a lot of talent. Yes Luo-Lang uses a bit more brute force, but it isn’t as simple as “brute force vs skilled ninja” trope that is rather overused. Their moves, while fast, aren’t the typical flurry of blinding punches/slashes common in shounen anime. You can also see them incorporate things like elbow shots and spinning on their heels to strike, clearly. The weight behind the fight is incredible. Both of these guys are built up to be the best of the best. So you’re pumped to see them finally fight. But they also know and acknowledge each other’s abilities. None of the cheesy “you’re weak, I’ll crush you - no wait, what are you?” The music that goes with this fight, man, does it make it even better. Makes you want to get up and pretend to be sword fighting yourself. Let me be clear, I love anime, including anime cliches. I hope they don’t go away. But this anime not only does a great fight scene with great animation, but also adds some unique to the history of anime fights. - Benjamin Ferr |
