| Video Discription | A stigma is when someone views another person in a negative way because that person has a characteristic or trait that's thought to be, or actually is, a disadvantage (a negative stereotype). This leads to a great deal of prejudice and discrimination, both of which are commonly experienced by people with mental health issues. The United Nations says that, “All persons with a mental illness... shall be treated with humanity and respect for the inherent dignity of the human person”, so clearly this respect and dignity is a freedom that should not be taken away, regardless of someones health status. Many studies have found that the media and the entertainment industry's play a key role in shaping public opinions about mental illnesses. They project a lot of negative stereotypes, and support the existing stigmas heavily. So with this, many peoples negative judgement almost always stem from a lack of understanding (based off whats seen in the media), rather than information based on the facts. Im certain that if we work together to try to educate more people about mental illness, and create a society with less stigma round the subject, many, MANY more people would seek treatment earlier on in their condition, before they got to a crisis point. So share this information with as many people as you can and help reduce this damaging and unnecessary stigma that many people with mental illnesses face every day!
