Overview of the Case Study:
I wanted to share a case study that delves into the complications of repeated yo-yo dieting and metabolic adaptations. The focus is on my client, Emma, whom I've worked with for twelve months.
Emma's Weight Fluctuations:
Emma, a New Zealand native, experienced significant weight fluctuations, oscillating around 15 kilograms due to shifts between active and inactive phases.
Initial Weight Loss Struggles:
When Emma came to me, she was at 93 kilograms, dissatisfied with her self-image. Despite regular exercise, extreme low-calorie diets were proving unsustainable. We initiated a continuous calorie restriction but hit a plateau at 82.4 kilograms after 15 weeks.
Introduction of the Reverse Diet:
Recognizing the metabolic adaptation, we transitioned into a 20-week reverse diet from 82.4 kilograms. Caloric intake increased gradually from 1075 to 1861, resulting in minimal weight gain. Despite exceeding previous plateau calories, Emma continued to lose weight, indicating a rejuvenated metabolic rate.
Sustained Weight Loss and Wedding Preparation:
The reverse diet lasted longer than the initial phase, showcasing the importance of allowing time for metabolism repair. By week 17, Emma reached 78 kilograms with a net loss, demonstrating the benefits of a well-executed reverse diet.
Currently, we're in a second fat loss phase using diet breaks every two weeks to preserve lean body mass. The goal is to reach a low-calorie floor before Emma's wedding, followed by a strategic reverse diet for a balanced approach to weight maintenance and enjoyment during the wedding festivities.
