When I learned last autumn there was a remastered version of this sweet, jazzy, R&B classic but that it wasn't on YouTube, I knew I had to remedy the situation. But after uploading it, I found it was blocked worldwide due to copyright claims. But now the block is lifted—at least for now. So enjoy it while you can, folks! These things tend to come and go. The remastered version is a welcome addition for lovers of smooth, in particular because the original version was recorded at low volume/bass levels and lacks the sonic oomph necessary to fit comfortably into a playlist of more recently recorded songs. The compilation CD includes several other remastered hits as well, and AllMusic reviewer Rob Theakston says it's "easily the best retrospective of her work available to date." The song has been covered by several R&B and jazz artists. Released nine months before the album of the same title, the song became one of the greatest musical successes of 1974, as well as of Roberta Flack's recording career. It scored a week at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, making it Flack's third #1 single. It also had five weeks at #1 on the Hot Soul Singles chart and two weeks at #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts of both Canada and the U.S. Flack produced the record under the pseudonym Rubina Flake. It went on to receive three Grammy nominations for Flack: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female.
