| Video Discription | First, we’ll review some tips on chain breakers before we look at our favorite. 1. Problem: I keep breaking the pin of the tool when pushing on the chain rivet. Solution: • Use a quality chain breaker with an adequately long grip for good grasp and big enough rotating handle that’s easy to turn. • Place the chain into the tool cradle and turn the handle until the pin is firmly up against the chain rivet. I use my finger to push down on the chain as I turn the handle. Make sure the pin is firmly against the rivet and not the plate of the link before you continue. A common cause of breakage of the pin is misalignment of the pin and rivet. Now you can turn the handle until the rivet is pushed out of the chain. 2. When you unscrew the pin with the rotating handle (sometimes called rotating rocker), after pushing the rivet out of the chain link, the pin of the chain tool unscrews from the tool and remains stuck in the link. • Remove the pin with a 7 mm or appropriate box wrench. • Apply some Loctite blue, reattach and tighten the pin firmly with the box wrench. That should prevent it from loosen when unscrewing the pin from the chain. 3. Problem: Some new chain tools such as the Park CT- 3.3 have no loosening cradle. The closest cradle or shelf on some chain breakers is the “loosening shelf.” It is used to loosen a stiff link by applying a tiny amount of pressure on the rivet with little to no movement of the rivet itself. However, since most of us most of us mechanics now use master links we don’t run into this “stiff” link problem. KMC makes master links to fit almost most manufactures chains and speeds, even Shimano and SRAM. Others make masterlinks for Campagnolo. 4. Problem: The rotating handle is too difficult to turn to move the pin out. Solution: • Most of the time, it’s the size of the grasp that’s too small to adequately support the tool as you turn the handle. Stay away from chain tools with small grasps such as on many multi tools and go with something more study such as that of the Park CT-3.3 or the Crank Brother F15 multi tool. 5. Problem: I run a Campagnolo chain that requires “peening’ the rivet. Do I need a special tool? Solution: • No. As mentioned above, KMC makes master links for 10, 11 and 12 speed Campy chain. So, you don’t have to “peen” the rivet that comes with the chain or to buy the Park $64 chain tool with removable anvil. Other manufacturers also make Campagnolo compatible 11 and 12 speed master links. We looked at a number of chain tools. If my grown daughter with small hands can hold the grip and turn the handle easily to remove the chain rivet, we felt the tool, when used properly would serve most any ones needs. Here’s what we suggest (although others may have their own favorites): 1. Park CT-3.2 (from Ebay) or CT-3.3 (Amazon or your local bike store) because of its long heavy grip and great rotating handle. When the pin and chain rivet are properly lined up, we have not ever broken a single pin in my many years of shop repair. This is our top recommendation. 2. The Park Mini Brute: My daughter had some trouble with this because of the small grip. We solve this in two ways. One by using a vise grip to hold the relatively small chain tool grip or a method of holding the chain against the grip as shown in the video in the upper right. 3. The Topeak Link 11 Folding Chain Tool: Good for those who may be replacing a chain only once a year. We haven’t used it enough to tell you how it holds up over time.
