From the first few seconds of seeing this Indian British soldier, we get a powerful impression of personality, ideologies, life goals, and position within the story. This 10 minute sequence gives us a challenge for a VILLAIN, an arc for him to show off his best qualities, in a way that's so unbalanced in its odds and stakes that we cannot look away. By the end, he is left with a conflict (failing to achieve his promotion) that expands his character even further. Even though the scene is clearly over the top, it gives us a simple step-by-step lesson in suspension of disbelief.
