Hello to everyone from the Comino team.
Earlier we have done an unboxing video of Asus RX590 (link is below) and this is a follow up video, during which we will also test the Asus RX590 video card, which is part of the Strix series. As mentioned in the previous video, the card was not build in accordance with the reference design, meaning the board design was created by Asus and they didn’t follow recommendations of AMD. Asus rx590 belongs to the mid. price segment. The card has only just come up on sale, and its price at the time of publication is approximately $369.

Asus RX580 shows 34 02 megahash etherium result with hardware modification and memory overclocking

Since this is a Strix series card, Asus made use of factory overclocking and the beautiful RGB backlighting along with Asus Aura technology. Aura allows to change colors and adjust the backlight at free will. However, AMD's new GPU is quite controversial, since it’s essentially a slightly modified Polaris 20 (also known as RX580) where we have seen a transition from 14nm tech proсess to the 12nm one. This makes the new AMD card potentially much better and so it would fit in exceptionally in a gaming system as well as in a mining farm, but we will test just how well. Let's take a closer look at the card. It has a massive cooling system, three Asus brand coolers and a solid and sturdy backplane that prevents the board from deforming during installation and possible transportation of a computer. It is important to note that the card takes up the 2.5 PCI slots on the motherboard. Which makes it a rather large card. 0dB Fan technology which is implemented in the card, allows to turn off the fans on the card when its under low load which means the card becomes silent. As per the usual requirements of the market, the card is fitted out with the most necessary ports - two display ports, two HDMI’s, one DVI for a convenient connection to the monitor. So nothing special here.Let's take a closer look at the card. After removing the cooling system and the support component, we can observe the following: The new Polaris 30 GPU manufactured using 12 nanometer technology (while Rx 580 and the predecessor Polaris 20 were made using the 14nm technology), a big plus there. 8 microcircuits of gddr5 memory with 8 gigabytes produced by Micron, definitely not the same one as on the 580. Vrm gpu power supply consists of 6 power phases, typical for Strix solutions by Asus. Slightly higher memory power consisting of a single power phase (To learn more about this, follow the link in the description for a video for a brief overview and modding of the ASUS board through soldering) At the very top, we see the gpu memory power controller consisting of yet another phase. Now, let’s move on to the most important part - testing of the video card during varying operating regimes. First, we will be testing the card while mining ether. Let's look at its potential in mining and whether it differs from its predecessor, the rx-580. To begin, let's take a look at how much the card gives out without overclocking, during a normal mode.
As we see, we got about 29 megahashes and so the result is not that different from rx580. Now let's try to overclock the card and pick up the timings and see what we can squeeze out this time.
As we can see the increase is rather insignificant. At the output we have 30.6 megahashes which is less than with rx580, by 1 megahash. A rather poor result but not that surprising for those mining ethereum. So, during mining we have essentially seen a copy of the rx580 which is produced with 14 nano meters instead of the usual 12. For the output, we also have the same rx580 with increased frequencies and a rather controversial mining result.
So, according to the test results of the rx590, we have an almost similar video card to the rx580. Asus strix rx590 is slightly faster in games, but at the same time it is inferior in mining due to less efficient memory overclocking. We can recommend for such a card to be used in an average gaming PC’s and you are more that fine with the shortfalls we have mentioned above. We did not notice a profound difference between the cards, but if it is important for someone to get that extra 10% while gaming or if you are putting together a brand new PC, then by all means you should pay attention to the rx590.
