In the beginning of this year, Ambasaador Riaz Hamidullah called me from Colombo and shared the idea of visualizing the SANDESH making heritage in rural Bangldesh. At that time, he was serving as Bangladesh High Commissioner to Sri Lanka.
Afterwards, during Covid lockdown period, we had several rounds of conversations. That’s the time, i learnt of the most remarkable work done by the leading fashion designer of Bangladesh, Chandra Sekhar Saha, in 2015 when he documented hundreds of SANDESH mould designs from various parts of Bangladesh. Finally, a book came out from NYMPHEA titled “1000 Possibilities of SANDESH”.
Riaz Sir introduced me to the book. When I saw, I was overwhelmed. Because, I never imagined that underneath the dusty-rusty-worn out metallic or wooden moulds lie such amazingly beautiful designs. And that all these designs are so much rooted in our own soils, for centuries! Never did I realise that the otherwise ordinary looking SANDESH motifs /designs can transcend to designs in clothes - in Sarees, textiles, etc.!
In GOOPY BAGHA Productions, with support from Riaz Sir, we agreed to produce an AV. Initially we thought of using the designs used in the award winning NYMPHEA book. But, as our team started research, we realized that it would be so much better and necessary to reach some of those vintage SANDESH makers deep inside Bangladesh. And capture the unspoilt ways and surrounding in which these artisan - craftsman exists.
Around October 20, by which time Amb Hamidullah moved to the Netherlands, he changed the idea. He said that he needed to showcase the SANDESH designs to the Dutch designers in Amsterdam side. I don’t have to say how creative and strong Amsterdam is in global fashion design.
Goopy Bagha team got hyped up. Both the Embassy and us agreed to launch the AV on 16 December 2020 - what else could be a better day to launch our baby to the world and Bangladesh!
As we go for shooting, we originally zero in on a village in Manikgonj. But, we couldn’t be satisfied. Finally, around end November, we find the villages of ........ deep inside Chapainawabganj.
During the last week of November, our full production team anchors there for a week. It was such an amazing 3 days we spent to a most artistic, tasteful people from the villages. To them, each day SANDESH making is like a ritual. Nothing less than that. I could see, while they have to get their earning, they just don’t do so for money. Entire surrounding, the village homes, people’s simplicity were so pristine - a bit like set of Pather Pachali!
Finally, yesterday, at the virtual celebration by Bangladesh Embassy in Netherlands, the Embassy premiered it. And today, I am excited to post it for all of you to see this magical stuff !
Thank you Bangldesh Embassy for making this dream come true😊 [NpENaxEcpOk] |
