Car drives away with wounded youth STORYLINE: Palestinian prime minister and veteran leader Yasser Arafat began a crucial meeting on Tuesday which held out the prospect of an end to two weeks of internal turmoil over security appointments and corruption. Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia was considering rescinding his resignation after talks, Palestinian officials said, after a two-week standoff. Palestinian officials said Qureia was considering assurances from Arafat that he would have more authority to make reforms. An attempt by Arafat to appoint a relative as head of Palestinian security set off demonstrations in Gaza. The protesters were members of Arafat's own Fatah movement, and their public show of discord was almost unprecedented since Arafat returned from exile in 1994. Earlier on Tuesday at least two Palestinians were killed when Israeli troops backed by helicopter gunships exchanged fire with Palestinians in an eastern neighbourhood of Gaza City, said Palestinian security officials. They added that one of the dead was wearing the uniform of the Hamas militant group but it was not clear if the second man had been a combatant. The officials said four local residents were wounded by the gunfire, among them a 12-year-old bystander. The Israeli army said troops in the area spotted a squad of Palestinians preparing to launch a rocket or mortar barrage at a nearby Jewish settlement and the soldiers opened fire, hitting an unknown number of the Palestinians. Palestinians shot back, but there were no casualties to the Israelis, the military said. The dead men were taken to a morgue in Gaza City.
