| Video Discription | In this video we look at the common skin signs of liver disease you should never ignore. Some may be obvious - like jaundice, and others maybe more subtle like Terry's nails. Liver disease as always has a spectrum of signs and symptoms, and the ones that appear on your skin can be key. I'll share with you what to look for when you have liver problems and also why these signs and symptoms appear. I'm Khalid - a family doctor in London, lets go! These are the 11 signs and symptoms of liver disease/cirrhosis/fatty liver/ liver problems: 1) Spider angiomas(Telangiectasis) The First is Spider Angiomas - aka Telangiectasis They are commonly seen in people with liver disease, particularly cirrhosis. But can also appear and be harmless in pregnancy and if women use COCP. There are lots of theories as to why these can occur including injuries to blood vessels. The liver normally processes hormones, including estrogen, but when the liver is damaged, it may not be able to metabolize estrogen effectively, leading to an increase in circulating levels. More estrogen in your blood, can cause dilation of small blood vessels leading to spider angiomas. 2) Finger Clubbing Clubbing occurs when the tips of the fingers and toes enlarge, and the nails curve around the fingertips, creating a rounded, chubby appearance.We think this happens due to an increase in connective tissue in the nail bed and it could be caused by reduced oxygen levels in the tissues. Clubbing of the nails can occur with lots of other health conditions like chronic lung disease, heart conditions like endocarditis, inflammatory bowel conditions and infectious dieases. 3) Yellow Skin - Jaundice Jaundice is a common sign of liver disease, some cancers and also conditions where your body breaks down your blood cells called - haemolytic anaemia 4) Red palms You basically get a reddish-pink colouration of the palms of the hands, It occurs due to increased blood flow to the palms, 5) Breast Tissue Development In response to higher levels of estrogen in the blood breast tissue can develop 6) Itchy Skin And so a severe itching, is a common symptom of liver disease. 7) Yellow bumps around eyes (Xanthomas) yellowish, raised bumps or plaques on the skin and can occur anywhere on the body. 8) Bruising Easily The liver makes a number of clotting factors - they are essential when you bleed as their aim is to stop the bleeding. 9) Dupuytren's contracture: On to Number 9 and its this - Dupuytren's contracture - a condition that can make it difficult to straighten your fingers. 10) Terry's nails If you notice the white portion of the nail bed becomes enlarged, while the red or pink portion of the nail bed becomes narrow, 11) Swollen Veins On Tummy - Caput Madusae. 0:00 - What does the liver do? 0:48 - Sign 1 of liver disease - spider nevi/angioma 1:38 - Sign 2 of liver problems - finger clubbing 2:44 - Sign 3 of liver issues - jaundice 3:54 - Sign 4 of liver disease - palmar erythema 4:18 - Symptom 5 of liver disease - gynaecomastia 4:52 - Sign 6 of liver disease - Itchy skin 5:18 - Sign 7 of liver problems - xanthomas 6:08 - Sign 8 of liver issues - bleeding or bruising easily 6:45 - Sign 9 of liver disease - dupuytrens contracture 7:48 - Sign 10 of liver disease - Terry's nails 7:56 - Sign 11 of liver problems - Ascites/ Distended veins in abdomen #liverdisease #fattyliverdisease #fattyliver Would you like to be healthy and learn from my reflections as a doctor?
