Seiko is a brand that is loved by many in the watch community and their history with dive watches is a big reason for the love. In 1965, Seiko released their first ever dive watch, the 62MAS, and it has since been a very collectible watch. After an extremely popular limited edition reissue of the 62MAS in 2017 with the SLA017, Seiko has decided to give their fans what they have been asking for. In 2020, Seiko released the SPB143, SPB145, SPB147, and the SPB149 which are 40mm reinterpretations of the famous 62MAS. The watch community went crazy, as did I, because we finally got a set of great looking Seiko divers with classic styling at the relatively rare 40mm size. And of course it was not a limited edition watch.
The SPB143 (SBDC101) is the variant with the grey sunburst dial and the black bezel, and it was very much the center of attention due to its good looks and because it looked the closest to the original 62MAS. For me, the SPB143 was the one because of the grey dial and ever since I laid my eyes on it, I knew that I wanted one. So more than a year has passed since the release and I finally am getting a chance to wear one. So will this live up to the lofty expectations set? Or will it just fall short of the mark. In this video, I go through my thoughts, what I loved about it, and finally what I didn’t love about it.
Huge thanks to Ryan, the very generous subscriber who lent me his personal SPB143 for this review. I still am amazed by his generosity and this review wouldn’t have been possible without him.
