The sphenoid bone makes up most of the middle part of the base of the skull. There are four main parts to the sphenoid bone: - the body, which is the most centrally positioned portion of the sphenoid bone. Anteriorly, it contributes to the nasal cavity. Laterally, it builds the medial wall of the optic canal. - the lesser wings project laterally from the superior aspect of the body; - the larger greater wings make up the most lateral part of the sphenoid bone; - and finally, the pterygoid processes which project inferiorly from the body.
