Mahinda Rajapaksa's resignation came just hours after at least 70 people were injured in Colombo, after a pro-Rajapaksa mob had attacked peaceful demonstrators. There had been reports over the weekend that Mr Rajapaksa had been instructed by his brother, the country's President, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, to step down. Monday's violence may have accelerated the move. Thousands of the Rajapaksa's supporters had been bussed from across Sri Lanka to Colombo, to hold a rally in support of the Prime Minister.
