| Video Discription | Presented on March 9, 2022 at the International Gastric Cancer Congress by Aki Smith, caregiver, and Founder of Hope for Stomach Cancer, a USA based nonprofit that provides educational resources to patients, caregivers and loved ones. The presentation is divided into three parts: First, Aki shared her story and the organic creation of Hope for Stomach. In this section, she shared how her father who was initially staged incurable is clinically cured, and how improvements need to be made for survivors. She discussed her story as a first generation Polish-Japanese-American also at high risk for developing stomach cancer and some of the challenges she faced since screening is not part of the American protocol. There are so many unmet needs and challenges —prevention, treatment options and survivorship—Hope for Stomach Cancer pushes and advocates for on a daily basis. It's more than a patient advocacy organization, it's the very heart and center of this community. What Hope does for the gastric cancer community- and how they raise awareness? In this section Aki shared some of our collaborations. She highlighted just some of their programs such as Hope in a bag and their support groups. She discussed programs that are in the pipeline, and how they raise awareness including Capitol Hill advocacy for research dollars and legislative guidelines for screening in high risk individuals How you can be involved to Bridge the Gap between Research and Patient Care? Last, in this section, she shared areas of how the medical professionals can be involved in their mission and vision. From the distribution of the hope in the bag in clinic to presenting a webinar and involved in support groups. Additionally, this year she has been very vocal how she plans to be included in peer to peer publish literature to creating a research lab for pediatric patients under 18 years in honor of Jewell Sweat. Because the data shows that approx. 400 children are being diagnosed with stomach cancer annually and most of them have no genetic predisposition. [zb2gnDyh-XQ] |
