| Video Discription | An extract from my paper 'A comparative exploration of the spiritual authority of the awliyā’ ('friends of God') in the Shī‘ī and Sūfī traditions with reference to the works of the Dhahabī Order and Allamah Tabataba’i', where I critically compare narrations on walayah in the Twelver Shi'i hadith collections with those found in later Sunni Sufi works. The concept, or phenomenon, of walayah (spiritual authority; close friendship), as mentioned in the Qur'an (5.55), was explained in detail by the Imams of the Ahl al-Bayt (as); during the third/ninth century, the concept of walayah most likely started to be incorporated into Sunnism, to become Sunni Sufism, for various reasons. The Sunni Sufi silsilas, that were developed after the eleventh century CE, appear to have been retrospectively constructed to justify the existence of Sunni Sufi communities.
