Sulfur for acne and does sulfur soap get rid of acne
Sulfur contains antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties to reduce one major culprit, Cutibacterium acnes. The bacteria known to cause acne. On top of that, sulfur is keratolytic, which means that, it causes the area around the acne to dry and peel, effectively exfoliating the area, which can help cool down the acne, and unclog the blocked pores, allowing a fresh layer of healthier new skin to grow in that same spot.
How does sulfur help acne
Not only does it have anti inflammatory, antimicrobial, and keratolytic properties. Sulfur is also bacteriostatic which help prevent new pimples from developing in that area. So think of it as instead of destroying the bacteria, it stops it from multiplying to cause newer pimples to form.
But what kind of acne should I be using it for is the big question.
Does sulfur treat acne
Sulfur is most effective for mild acne. Itts not strong enough to tackle down the deeper forms of acne. So If youre one to not necessarily break out with full blown cystic acne, and maybe get the occasional white or blackhead. Sulfur is going to work best here because it targets both the oil buildup and the extra skin cells that cause these comedones.
Sulfur for acne scars
Sulfur works for very light scarring because it dries out the skin and removes the extra skin cells. It is thought that it can help to even out the skin through its exfoliating nature after the acne has cleared. However, most acne scars that are deeper will require more intense treatments, such as: salicylic acid and topical retinoids.
Using sulfur for acne and hyperpigmentation
If it is thought to even out the skin, reducing the hyperpigmentation of scars by replacing passed away skin cells with new, non-hyperpigmented cells that develop in their place. If this turnover is supported, than sulfur may in fact help with both issues. Even though more research is needed to say conclusively, anecdotal research is around to suggest this is the case.
Which type of sulfur for skin
Lets go through three of the most common options: foaming sulfur soap, sulfur clay mask, and sulfur spot treatment, which is my favorite option.
How to use sulfur soap
This is best reserved for sensitive and oily skin types. If you have skin that that is oily, and are waking up with an oily skin and produce more oil through the day. When you wash your face in the morning with foaming sulfur soap, your morning is going to start with less oil, and when you wash your face before sleeping, your pores will be clear at night. But make sure to not exceed washing your skin more than two times a day with it as it can lead to irritation and we dont want that at all. Be sure to use a moisturizer afterwards to prevent overdrying the skin as well.
How to use sulfur clay mask
For the sulfur clay mask, which has gained a lot of popularity. Again, its best for oilier skin types, as it allows sulfur to stay longer on. And its best to use it after you have cleansed your face with a gentle cleanser. Make sure to Avoid the eyebrows, the mouth, and the eyes and Once the mask time is over, rinse off the mask gently and try your best not to scrub the face after because you can irritate the skin this way.
How to use sulfur spot treatment
It is meant to reduce the pimples that are slowly becoming visible. If the pimple is there already, the sulfur wont help that as much, because its moreso preventative. Apply the spot treatment on the skin surface and wash it off before bedtime. Only use spot treatment once a day, because you will dry out your skin if you keep using it throughout the day.
And on thing to keep in mind is: sulfur can have a pungent odor, which people say resembles that of rotten eggs. And a lot of modern skin care products do a good job in masking this smell. However, some may still have faint traces of the rotten egg smell so dont be alarmed of this.
