It will take around 20 minutes by car from Paro town to come to the foot of the hill, from where you have to start the trek. Paro Taktsang is on the cliff. You have to buy ticket from a house below before starting the trekking if you want to enter inside monastery. You will not get any tickets after it. The cost of the tickets per adult is 1000 rupees for people of the SAARC countries. Rent a stick from this place before you start climbing. Soon, you will feel the benefit of this stick cost only 50 rupees when you start climbing the mountain. Here are some souvenir stalls and the price of these souvenirs is bit low than Paro town. You can pick up some of those for your loved ones on the way back. You can take a horse ride to travel around half of the way expending around 1500 rupees. But thing is that, I would feel more scared to trek the mountain taking the horse ride on this way. Moreover, you can walk the entire path on your own if you could walk up to the cliff to reach the monastery after leaving the horse. Now, let me share some information about the Tiger Nest monastery. It is believed that Guru Padmasambhava meditated in the Taktsang cave or Tiger Lair for three years, three months, three weeks, three hours in the 8th century. Padmasambhava or Guru Rinpoche is credited for introducing Buddhism in Bhutan and the protector of the country. It is believed that Guru Padmasambhava incarnated in eight forms. It is legend that Yeshe Tsogyal, an ex-wife of an emperor, transformed herself into a tigress and carried Guru Padmasambhava on her back and flew him to the Taktsang Cave from Tibet. The fourth Druk ruler Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye built the monastery on the cliffside around the cave in 1692. Many believe that Guru Padmasambhava had reincarnated again in the form of Tenzin Rabgya. Paro Taktsang Monastery or Tiger’s Nest hangs 3120 meters or 10240 feet above the sea level. You need to trek around 900 meters or 3000 feet to reach the monastery since the Paro Valley is about 7000 feet above the sea level. Don’t go fast when you are walking on the trail to the monastery. You will be exhausted soon and tracking will be difficult for you if you try to walk fast. Remember, slow and steady wins the race. You can complete at the tiger nest trekking easily if you move slowly and steadily. You can see Taktsang Monastery from different viewpoints during the trekking. You'll find a way toward the Taktsang Cafeteria in the middle of the trekking. There is another way from the upper side to go to that place. Travelers usually have their lunch here with vege items when coming down from the monastery. You can actually see Tiger Nest in your parallel at a point before the monastery. This is an ideal place to take pictures. Actually, the monastery was built on precarious cliff of the hill. The trail toward the monastery is built by the cliffside from this view point. This cliffside trail is simultaneously risky and exciting. You will see the numerous colorful prayer flags are hanging in different places on your way to the Taktsang. You must be scared when looking down the hill. You will have to go downstairs first then again upstairs before reaching the doorstep of the monastery. There is waterfall before the monastery. It was quite cold when we visited the Tiger nest in the first of January. See, how the water of the fall turns into snow here. If you are an adventure enthusiast, this steep mountain pass will give you too much pleasure. Take reminder that taking picture or video inside the monastery is forbidden.
