Ia terbang ke Tokyo dari Kyushu untuk menemui Den Fujita, dan mendapatkan sebuah nasihat tak ternilai: “Jangan melihat industri masa lalu, lihatlah industri masa depan.” Berbekal nasihat ini, Son memutuskan kuliah di University of California Berkeley, dan berjanji ke diri sendiri untuk meluangkan 5 menit setiap hari untuk memikirkan sebuah penemuan. Pada 1979, lahirlah mesin penerjemah pertama, yang patennya ia jual senilai 1 juta dolar AS. Dengan uang sebanyak itu, ia mendirikan Softbank.
