| Video Discription | Tinea Capitis (Scalp Ringworm): Symptoms, Causes & Treatment - Scalp Fungal Infection Tinea Capitis, also known as Scalp Ringworm, which is a common fungal infection of the scalp involving both the skin and hair, and often presents with pruritic, or itchy skin with scaling areas of hair loss. What causes Tinea Capitis (Scalp Ringworm)? Tinea Capitis is caused by fungi, or dermatophyte, which include; Trichophyton tonsurans, Microsporum canis, and Microsporum audouinii. Signs and Symptoms of Tinea Capitis (Scalp Ringworm); • Swollen red patches. • Dry, scaly rashes. • Severe itchiness. • Patches of hair loss (alopecia). • Flaking scalp that resembles dandruff. • Low fever. • Swollen lymph nodes. How is Tinea Capitis (Scalp Ringworm) diagnosed? • High index of clinical suspicion. • Wood lamp examination. • Microscopic examination for fungal hyphae. • Culture for fungal organisms. How is Tinea Tinea Capitis (Scalp Ringworm)? The treatment of Tinea Capitis requires systemic antifungal medication, as topical antifungal products are ineffective for treatment of tinea capitis. • Microsize griseofulvin, i.e., Grifulvin pills, or suspension, 10mg/kg daily for 6–8 weeks. • 2% selenium sulfide (Exsel) twice weekly helps in lowering viable fungus spore counts. • Oral ketoconazole is the alternative medication. • Imidazole or ciclopirox cream should be applied to the scalp to prevent spread. • Tinea capitis treatment shampoo.
