The initials of JRR Tolkien, author of The Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings, stand for John Ronald Reuel. 2. The family name Reuel means “son of God” in Hebrew. It was one name of Moses’s father-in-law. 3. The name Tolkien comes from “tollkühn” which in German means daredevil, reckless or foolhardy. 4. Tolkien served as a signals officer at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. 5. In 2010, JRR Tolkien came third on the Forbes list of Top-Earning Dead Celebrities, surpassed only by Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley. 6. Kingsley Amis, whom Tolkien taught at Oxford, described him as “incoherent and often inaudible”. 7. 450 miles of yak hair was used in the making of Peter Jackson’s first movie in the Hobbit trilogy. 8. The Oxford English Dictionary lists nine words, including “hobbit” as first used by Tolkien. 9. Among these is “eucatastrophe”, which Tolkien said meant “the sudden happy turn in a story which pierces you with a joy that brings tears”. 10.
